Chapter Twenty-Three
Judging by the direction of the shout, the man had to be up near the ceiling. Nate glanced at Wes and Ellie, seeing his own worry reflected in their eyes. Had they said anything here that might have given away the compass or their mission? He couldnât remember.
He leaned in close to the others. âIf he does anything suspicious, be ready to act quickly.â
Wes nodded solemnly.
Ellie pursed her lips. âOnly if itâs absolutely necessary. I donât want another verist getting hurt because weâre too jumpy.â
Nate hesitated before giving his own curt nod. Protecting the compass might require them to take decisive action. If word about the artifact spread, they could find themselves shifting from the hunters to the hunted.
Still, he didnât particularly relish the thought of attacking another verist. Heâd just need to make sure he stayed alert for any signs of trouble before it got to that point.
âHang on,â he shouted up into the fog. âWeâll see what we can do to get you down.â
âMuch obliged,â the faint voice responded.
âSo,â he said more quietly, âhow in the Null are we going to do that?â
âWhat about your Frost Shield?â Ellie suggested. âYou could just turn it sideways and use it like a floating platform.â
He shook his head. âI experimented with that while we were traveling. The shield can only move a couple feet away from me before the weave destabilizes. I suppose if I put it directly underneath me, I might be able to hover a foot or two off the ground while I concentrate. But that wonât get me to the top of the cavern or stop someone else from falling.â
Wes rubbed his chin. With his Ice Skin still active, it made him appear as some ancient statue carved to resemble a brilliant thinker of old.
âI could try leaping and grabbing him out of mid-air,â he finally said. âThat might dissipate some of the impact. If I miss, however, it could beâ¦bad.â
âThen just donât miss,â Ellie said.
âActually, now that Iâve said it out loud, I donât think it sounds like a great plan.â
âWe could have Nate try the same thing with his Gusting Boots. Then even if he fails, we get the enjoyment of watching him soar through the air with all the majesty of a falling rock.â
âI donât see what all this fuss is about anyway,â Nate said, pointedly ignoring Ellie. âCanât he just jump and let his aegis absorb the damage for him?â
Ellie sighed. âYou know it doesnât work like that. The fall probably wonât kill him, but the force of the impact is still likely to hurt like the Null and break a few bones. Having an aegis doesnât make you immortal.â
âHeâll recover.â Ellie glared at him, and he hurriedly added, âLook, all Iâm saying is weâre clearly not the best-equipped verists to handle a situation like this. We shouldnât waste any more time here than we have to.â
âThere has to be something we can do to help,â she insisted.
âI might have an idea,â Wes said thoughtfully.
